COLDSTONES QUARRY - OCT 2014
'Coldstones quarry is located on Greenhow Hill in the Yorkshire Dales near Nidderdale, at 1400 feet above sea level it is one of the highest quarries in Britain. It provides aggregates and asphalt for major construction projects across the UK. The quarry is around 300m deep and worked in six 'benches' each around 15-18m in height. From an observation platform the quarrying operations are seen; blasting, extraction amd crushing of rock. The landscape becomes the antithesis of architecture, an antipode recording the rate of construction as deconstruction. The photographer Edward Burtynsky's photo essay on quarries is fascinating, read here.
