RYEDALE FOLK MUSEUM
Located on the North Yorkshire Moors UK, The Museum commissioned a new dedicated education building as part of its phased expansion. Comprising a flexible space accommodating workshops, classes and exhibitions, a film screening theatre, a study with views across the museum grounds and associated subservient provisions for staff and visitors. Referencing the museums continued relevance as a repository of yorkshire vernacular architecture, the new building assimilates traditional building craft with sustainable construction methodologies, and is defined by a water reed thatched roof and facades, rammed earth interior walls and floor, straw bale exterior walls clad with larch, agricultural corrugated corten steel cladding, and a laminated timber frame structure. The water reed landscape, harvested once a year and utilised for repairs to thatching throughout the museum, further pursues a learning ethos through relation of cultivation to construction materials. The project acquired planning approval in spring 2009. James undertook the project whilst working for Purcell-UK Architects.
